Once again Liberty Cargo has undertaken a very special transfer. Three male common vultures (Gyps fulvus) were transferred to Bulgaria for their reintroduction in an area where this species became extinct a hundred years ago. Barcelona Zoo had a special interest in reintroducing the vultures, and following the recommendations of the coordinator of the Vulture Conservation Foundation (VCF) Liberty Cargo has successfully carried out the transfer of these protected birds to their destination, Bulgaria, where, in 2009, as part of the European Commission LIFE Programme a project was started to protect these vultures from extinction.
The birds will spend some time in Green Balkans rescue centre in Bulgaria to acclimatise to the area and to accept it as their own territory. The vultures will be freed using the “soft release” technique whereby the aviary where they are housed is left open for them to leave when they wish.
